Stay in the know with PTO

Lunchtime - the ins and outs you didn't know you needed to know. The Share Bin : a bin that sits on the lunch line counter for students to drop unopened items they don't want to eat, and/or won’t make the return trip home without becoming a science experiment. The Share Bin is open for any student that would like a little something more. It helps serve kids who forgot their lunch (some of our devoted packers are not as keen to try the school lunch, as many of us parents know), as well as students with a still hungry belly despite finishing their meal. Our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders often reach for the Share Bin. Many students will remember the snack shelf - it sat outside the cafeteria office door and was stocked with extra lunch items, and snacks parents bought for their children that they didn't like. The shelf has transformed into the Share Bin to prevent idle hands from breaking a seal on a food they don’t intend to eat. Many teachers have been asking for parents to send in snacks with their students, or to donate snacks to the class for the students who forget theirs.

The flowerbeds in front of the school. Did you know that's a PTO opportunity? Me either until this year! That's up to us to organize and maintain. This year we aim to organize ourselves to collaborate on the front flower beds. Our 2nd graders will be partnering with Mr. Bryce Pulley, the city's community coordinator, to learn about native plants and pollinators. They'll be doing some hands on activities including weeding, mulching and starting seeds in jugs to cold stratify. In the spring, they'll follow back up around Earth Day to plant their seedlings! PTO is working on finding picnic tables and benches to use in the flower beds as well. Our hope is to create a more inviting space for parents and students.

Snack Time! Many teachers offer a snack break to help bridge the gap from lunch and the end of the day. Many of our busy and growing students are hungry after lunch. A hungry student is a distracted student. If your child's teacher offers a snack time but your child doesn't bring one, or eats it during lunch, our teachers often provide a snack for them. Historically, they have been paying out of pocket themselves for these snacks. While generous, they shouldn't be paying for that. For classes that aren't getting enough snack donations, PTO is helping bridge the gap. If you can, please donate by sending your child in with a box of snacks, or donate to PTO and we'll handle the shopping. Board members have memberships to BJ's, Sam's, and Costco.

Class Parties! There are 3 class parties each year. We ask for 3 volunteers per class. 1 to bring in a snack, 1 for the drink, and 1 for the activity/game. Parties last 30 minutes and go quickly, so we recommend being early and prepping ahead as much as possible. Come prepared to run the event, bring extras in case of spills for the younger classes. Don't forget to count the teacher! Ahead of class parties, you'll connect with the teacher for a class count and allergy list, if any.
